My Beginning as a Reader

Well where do I start??

Probably at the beginning… it was January 8th 1991 a casual Tuesday in Bairnsdale Hospital when Anne Little, yours truely, came into the world…. ok ok I probably don’t need to start way back there.

I could go into lots of detail about my childhood and how it shaped me both as a reader and  a person but I will cut to the chase and fast forward to 12 year old me, let me set the scene:

My Dad had passed away 2 years earlier, after being sick since I was 6, and my mum wanted us (my siblings and I) to see that while we have had some shitty things happen to us our life is pretty great. So off we went with a charity organisation to Zambia in Africa to build an orphanage for 3.5 weeks before traveling around for another 2.

Now I don’t remember how this book came into my hands but there I am on the airplane with Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. MY MIND WAS BLOWN. I remember reading it over and over and over every night while I was on this trip and being desperate for the next one – which my wonderful mum got for me when we returned home. I was ABSOLUTELY hooked. I knew then that Fantasy was going to be my favourite genre. I continued to devour everything by Tamora Pierce and she is still my favourite Author today. I am endlessly thankful to her for showing me some kick ass girls who save the day. Below are the first two books in my favourite series by her:

These books I have had for over 10 years and they are starting to look a little battered. That is the copy of Alanna that came to Africa with me and it holds a special place in my heart.

Fantasy will remain my favourite genre for all time. It gave me the escape I needed when I was a teen and still does today when real life gets just a bit too hard. These books are the first ones I remember staying up till literally 5am reading and then attempting to get up for school the next day haha not much has changed in my reading habits I still stay up way past my bed time. Like most 90’s babies I was and still am obsessed with Harry Potter, but it was not dear Harry that got me obsessed with reading it was Alanna and her kick ass ways.

So that was my beginning I kept it breif otherwise you would have been here all day, but I will post in the future more about that trip to Africa which was amazing and about my Dad.

I have many years of reading since I was 12 to tell you about so watch this space!

Thanks bookworms love you all xoxo

  1. That’s my copy of Alanna too!!! I’m so glad that you were able to find a place amongst the readers. I’m so sorry to hear about your father – I’m sure he would be so proud as to the person that you have become! Love to see you blogging now as well, welcome (again!) to the community, and can’t wait to see more!!! ❤

I’ve reread them so many times my copies are worn and old but i love that they look well loved and they hold such a special place in my heart.

  3. This post is so heartfelt and amazing, I love that Alanna was such a special book for you and your mum sounds like one amazing person 🙂 Battered books are always the best because they’ve been with you through the most, I still have so many broken spine copies of books that I re-read over and over when I was a teen and I still love them to bits 🙂 Great post!
